Conflict Resolution
& Negotiation
Much of this course was dedicated to understanding non-violent communication techniques that can open us up to Conflict Transformation. The course allowed us to understand conflict, its components and potential outcomes, and reflect on our perspective of what is 'good' or 'bad' about conflict. We analyzed this through sharing our own experiences, critical analysis through reflective papers and through an extensive case study of the 1983 Arizona Mine Strikes.

Much of the content we created in this class is highly personal because it is based on values, ethics, beliefs and how they differ from the party one is in conflict with. The concepts and skills we touched on were quickly put into practice to facilitate decision-making in interpersonal, organizational and even at a macro level. I've described a few concepts below.

Internal dissonance is said to give rise to behaviors likely to result in social conflict. Alleviating social conflicts is thus also an attempt to reestablish inner peace and harmony

Reflective Peacebuilding
The idea of a learning community builds in reflective systems to create higher efficiency response times. This concept is related to my core value of a 'listening community.'

Moral Imagination
The concept of getting beyond the conflict through self-realization, and way from seeing a solution as 'black or white.' Being creative within the context you are.

Case Study
A partner and I created a Conflict Map of the case study.
Conflict is complex, and in order to decipher it, one needs to understand intentions, possible outcomes and relationships. This was a particularly sad story that involved racism, politics, death and community devastation.
