MICHELLE HOCHKEPPEL

Leadership & Diversity
One of the most effacing courses that created space for us to have intimate, real conversations. For me this class touched on the importance of trusting your gut and finding a way to stand up when something feels off.
takeaways
-
how is diversity present or not present in the industry i'm apart of? (Agriculture)
-
the affect of language and communication interculturally
-
common ground can foster growth
'does this reflect any patterns of denial, evasion or privilege?'
A few of the topics we discussed:
Gender
What messages do you receive that shape your ways of being based on how you gender-identify? Are you quiet? Strong?
Race
What areas of your life have been influenced by your race? Where have you seen structural or systemic racism appear?
Class
How would you describe your class and how's its informed your decisions, goals and self-view?
Intercultural Competence
How often do you consider others' background, beliefs or customs? What kind of clarity could consideration bring to potential conflict?
Artifacts
Here's a Powerpoint slide deck on the importance of diversity in agriculture.

Cultivating Intersectional
Land-Ownership
Serving as background research for the powerpoint presentation I wrote a Literature Review on agricultural intersectionality; the policies, history and structural racism in place that inform the current state of agriculture. Read it here.
Discussions & Proposals
Through annotated bibliographies, literature reviews, proposals and discussion boards we engaged in dialogue about these challenging topics, considered our audience, and defined key takeaways. Take a look at the annotated bibliography that informed the Literature Review.
The Importance of Diversity
in our Rural Landscapes
Here's a recorded version of the Powerpoint featured above. It features more details on the links I've made visually to art historical references, their importance and how we carry that forward. There are so many ways to explore the depth of diversity, I hope a bit of that story is clear in this presentation.
